Up, up and away

Trevor and I headed off from Canberra at 10:25am on Tuesday 12 August bound for Boston. The schedule had us 24 hours from Canberra take-off to Boston touch-down.

Lacking sleep, I had been busy doing swimming stuff before flying out, I whiled away the time dozing and reading. Trevor managed to watch at least three movies.

We flew Canberra to Sydney and then on to Dallas Fort Worth from where we were flying to Boston on an American Airlines flight. By the time we collected our bags and cleared Customs and Immigration then went through the screening process at DFW we did not have a great deal of slack time so went straight to the boarding lounge. We were a little surprised when AA announced that our flight would be delayed as the plane that they were going to use could not land at Boston. Oops. The delay ended up being almost two hours and I started having pink kittens over our accommodation as the reception normally closes at 9pm. I sent a quick email to Copley House to inform them that the flight had been delayed.

By the time we approached Boston it was dark, not a surprise as it was after 10pm, and the lights of the city below us were quite magical. One benefit in being late! It was evident that flights normally don't get in that late as all the concessions were closed and security staff had to open the doors to let us out.

After grabbing our bags we headed out and got a taxi and headed in to Boston proper. I was pleased to find reception still open when we arrived at Copley House. We were not the only late arrivals. Check in took about a minute and we were directed to our apartment which was a couple of blocks from the Copley House reception. It was easy to find and once in we dumped our bags and headed out to the nearby large 24x7 supermarket to get some supplies. At midnight we were eating dinner and checking up on emails that had come in over the previous 24 hours.

Normally I would argue that the travel day does not really count but it had enough moments of drama to warrant a mention.

The next post will deal with Boston more generally.
