Boston Wednesday 13 August

After the late night we were both awake by 7 o'clock which was a bit surprising.

Anyway, we had breakfast and I decided that the milk I had bought looked like white water and did not taste all that great while Trevor discovered that his cornflakes were flavoured with something and were fairly yuck, too. A great way to start the day.

It was raining when we got up and this continued off and on throughout the day.

We did discover that Boston drivers are very tolerant. They do allow pedestrians to cross roads even when they don't have right of way and were generally tolerant towards other drivers.

Bostonians are obviously used to puddles forming all over the sidewalks when it rains as many of them were wandering around in quite fasionable gumboots. Sensible footwear as puddles abounded. The streets seemed to lack drains and the water had nowhere to go.

Trevor's phone is so out of date that we could not get a SIM card for it. It was not a problem in England last year but definitely one here in the US.

I was still had some swimming stuff to finish off and, given the miserable weather, I decided to knock them over.

At lunch time we walked over to the Prudential centre, a classy shopping centre, and had chowda in a bread bowl. I had the Boston clam version while Trevor opted for the Manhattan version. The Boston version won. The Manhattan clam chowder is a tomato based soup and did not work nearly as well as the Boston/New England one.

By mid afternoon I had had enough of my swimming and suggested that we head out and walk the Freedom Trail.

What really struck us about Boston is just how compact the central part of the city is. More on that later.

We picked up the Freedom Trail in the Boston Common and followed it to the end at Bunker Hill. We then re-traced our steps and, as we passed through one of the Italian areas, stopped for dinner in one of the very many italian restaurants. The meals were good with service to match.

We had planned to have an easy day with some walking to get us over the time shift and we did manage just that.

I will include photos of the freedom Trail in a later post as we walked most of it again on Saturday in fine weather.
